The Belfast Philharmonic Society is seeking to recruit a musicianship tutor for its Phil Kids, Youth & Chamber Choirs (ages 7-20). The tutor is required to have knowledge of Kodály’s philosophy of music education and experience utilising the teaching tools associated with Kodály pedagogy. Working under our Director & Assistant Director you will be part of a fantastic team that ensures we provide the ultimate musical experience for our choir members.
The role is part-time on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from September 2021, and we envisage may involve online classes in the autumn.
In October the Cross Border Youth Choir met up (online) to learn some new Christmas music, which has become a tradition of ours. The choirs were Belfast Philharmonic Youth and Chamber choirs, and Dublin Youth and Chamber Choirs, with DYC Training Choir taking part for the first time. The singers learned the music in the afternoon and in the evening went away to record themselves individually so that Brian Murphy could edit it all together for us.
The recording we created from that day was one of five winning entries in Making Music's Christmas Carol competition, which meant we were played on Classic FM on Thursday 17th December! We're so proud of the work our young singers put in every time we meet, whether that's online or in person.
We are so delighted to share 'Hope', composed by Laura Sheils in collaboration with the Belfast Philharmonic Youth Choir.
With grant support from the Community Foundation for Northern Ireland, the singers worked with Laura to create a brand new piece of music reflecting on their experiences in lockdown and hopes for the future. The choir then learned their parts in online rehearsals and recorded individual tracks from home which have been expertly put together by Brian Murphy into our virtual choir.
The piece is performed by the Phil Youth Choir, accompanied by Gail Evans (piano) and members of the Ulster Orchestra, led by Youth Choirs Artistic Director Lynsey Callaghan.
We're really happy to show everyone what we've been working on - please have a listen and let us know what you think on the Youtube page!
